Three Tips for Choosing a Contractor
So, you’ve decided to do up your home. You’ve got a clear picture of the finished product in your mind, and now all you need is the perfect contractor to help you realise it. We understand that this can be a daunting task – your home is precious to you and it needs to look beautiful.
We believe that finding an excellent contractor comes from investing time and energy in the search. So, to get you started, we’ve put together our three top tips for finding a top-quality contractor who will help you create the gorgeous home you’ve been dreaming of.
1. Do your research
Begin by asking for recommendations from people you trust: friends, family, perhaps even your interior designer. Make sure you research any suggestions online, getting a feel for the tone of their communications and looking at customer reviews. Alternatively, there are various trustworthy websites – such as checkatrade.com and houzz.co.uk – that will point you in the direction of dependable and professional contractors in your local area. Again, follow this up with plenty of research – it’s important to find someone you’re entirely comfortable with.
2. Get three different quotes (from three different contractors)
Meet with, and get quotes from, at least three different contractors before you make your choice. By inviting three or more firms out to assess the scope of the project, you can determine a reasonable price for the contract and ensure you don’t get overcharged for unnecessary labour. At the same time, a price that is considerably lower than the average could be an indication of low-quality work. Once you’ve decided on your most cost-effective and best-quality option, you can begin to think about which of the contractors you’d most like to work with in terms of their personality and work ethic. Ultimately, you need to feel at ease having them in your home for the duration of the project.
3. Ask plenty of questions
Before you sign anything, there are some definite questions you need to ask your chosen contractor. First, do they have insurance, and is it enough to cover them for your project? Don’t take their word for it – make sure you see adequate proof and, if you’re still not certain, call their insurance agent. Are they from a registered association– such as the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) – that can verify their reliability? Can the contractor show you any examples of past projects so that you can determine the quality of their work? Ask for multiple references so that you can speak to past clients about any queries you have and gauge their overall opinion of the work. Remember, if you have any questions, make sure you ask your contractor. If they’re suitable, they’ll be able to provide you with good answers.
