Christmas Decorations Tips

I am sure that whenever you mention the word “Christmas”, most people will say that is their favourite time of the year. Well is mine too, because I love the atmosphere created by the decorations and the lights. If it was for me I would keep the Christmas tree all year round!

During the Christmas period, I do get calls from some of our clients to give them some ideas on how to decorate their homes for the holidays to complement the design that we have already done. And I have to be honest I love when I can see the houses we have designed become even more magic with extra lighting and decorations! Of course, there are new trends every year, and there are different styles of decorations from Nordic, to Country to minimalist.

Hence, how do we find the right compromise between the trends and our personal style?

Christmas Mood board

Firstly look at your house and see what is the style, or if it is a mixer which one is more dominant. Then create a Christmas mood board or pin board. Start maybe a month before you will start decorating so that you the time to change things on that. In the end, you should come up with something that in terms of colours and style will perfectly blend with your interior. Thus, you know what to get and the mood that you want to create before starting with your decoration shopping.

So let’s start with some tips:

Christmas tree tips interior decorations

The majority of the time your living room is the centre of the action, as this is where you will entertain your guests and spend most of your time. Hence, when it comes to Christmas decor, it’s no surprise that all our attention is focused on our living room. The main focal point here will be your tree. You might opt for an artificial one or real one but make sure that you choose the right size for your room. Select your decoration here so to follow the colour scheme that you have set for the whole house!

Decorate your windows. Most of the times these are forgotten but actually adding decorations to the windows can create a nice and magic atmosphere. You can add lights, stencil or if you have got a quite wide window sill some nice candles too! You can also add some ribbons of different length with colours that match your interior decor!

Christmas windows decorations

If you have shelving or bookcase use them to add some decorations or some hanging ribbons with Chrismas ornaments. You can make these very easily as well if you have some decorations left from your tree!

Use soft furnishings to create the mood. In fact, adding a throw or cushions with the Christmas colour scheme that you have decided can set immediately the mood. For instance, I love the red and gold combination, hence my all decoration theme follows these two colours, or you can opt for a silver mood or white and frosty one! is all up to you.

Candles decor

If for your decorations you like to use natural elements there is plenty of choices out there. Pine cones, that you can find everywhere – in the park, in the woods or in your own garden, you can use acorns and dried fruit, spices and nuts.

Candles are a very good way to add atmosphere, colour and smell with typical Christmas fragrances. Or you can also use an essential oils diffuser. You can then buy a set of oils that have specific Christmas fragrances.

Do not forget other rooms too!

Wreath Kitchen Units

The kitchen and your dining area are other important rooms to decorate. If you are going to host dinner parties your table will be the main focal point. Enhance your table with a nice Christmas centrepiece that can be made with many different elements. Use your creativity here! Add season flowers, pines, candles and lights too. This will give a nice welcome to your guests when they sit down. Tablecloth and napkins are a great way to decorate the kitchen. If you like you can also introduce some small hanging wreath in some of the kitchen units.

Get your kids to help you to decorate, maybe they can do their rooms and use their creativity in there. Most kids do they Christmas decoration at school and to be able to display their work will give them proud and they will feel part of the all Christmas ‘process’. Also, no one stops you to continue the decoration in your bedroom too!

Don’t forget your entrance and the outdoor too. This is the first thing that people will see when visiting you. Just simple things like some external lighting and a Christmas Wreath will do the job. Of course, if you can follow the same colour scheme of your interior to give a sense of consistency.

Stairs Christmas Decorations

If you have stairs, use them too. Especially in the evening this will create a fantastic mood and give the impression that the decorations are continuing upstairs.
Some shops that I use and think are great for Christmas decoration for all the rooms are the house are both Wayfair and Luxdeco.

Use plants

And of course, I could not mention plants. There are some plants that we see around only at Christmas time like the poinsettia. These are wonderful to give colour and add a touch of nature. You can have in red, white or soft pink too, thus you can adapt it to your colour scheme. You can use the Holly or any other that comes to from the Aquifoliaceae family to create great compositions, winter white Amaryllis and Winter Azalea, there is s broad choice.
If you have a garden don’t forget to decorate it too! Just adding some lighting will carry the Christmas mood outdoor.

Also, trees are not the only way you can decorate your home. You can also introduce Nativity imagery and Christmas village. These are great to create a magic atmosphere. I have to be honest, my husband and I have a little passion for Christmas village and every year is part, together with the Christmas tree, of our house decoration. We enjoy making it but it takes a long time and planning, so if you are thinking to do it plan your time wisely. When is finished is a lovely entertaining game for our guests too!
