What Is A Concept Board?
A concept board can be defined as the starting point of the creative process for a new home/room design.
What defines the elements of the concept board are all the information and sparks obtain from the client brief.
At the client meeting, in fact, you need to have as much information as possible regarding his/her lifestyle in general and more specifically regarding preferred colours, materials, needs, habits and hobbies. Everything that can help to design and create a final comfortable space for the client just according to his/her needs.
At this early stage, observation is also very important as from how he/she is dressed or how she/he behaves you can learn more about on what he/she likes or dislikes as well as understand more about the style the client prefers.
After the client meeting, there is an analysis of the brief to highlight the keywords and all the client preferences that we would like to add to the design.
From this analysis, you will start the creative process: the concept board.
A concept board, therefore, can be described as the direction that the project will take according to the client brief.
So what is a concept board?
Materially it is a visual presentation of style, mood, colours, textures that we want to use in the room, through these elements it will explain the overall feeling and final look.
It is made of only images carefully selected to represent the mood and the feel that we would like to have as a final result of the room.
Substantially is a visual collage that can be made as a tactile, physical board searching images on magazines, cutting and sticking them on an A3 cardboard or can be created as a digital page, selecting images from the thousands and thousands of websites, grabbing and sticking them in the digital board in a second.
We normally prefer to create our concept boards as a digital page because it gives us more freedom in terms of creativity and then prints them on our specifically designed boards so to be more effective at the client presentations.
Why is it important to start always with a concept board?
The concept is very useful at the early stage of a project as a guide tool for the designer and for the client. The client will understand the colour scheme, the materials and the overall feeling and before proceeding further with the Sample Board, the designer will have the client approval.
When it is made in the right way, so as an organized display of the designer thoughts and ideas, it is a very useful tool to use to effectively communicate the design ideas to the client.
The pros for the designer also is not to lose track where, further in the project, will be overwhelmed by fabrics, furniture, wallpaper, etc. In this way, the designer will always have a guide to go back to the initial tracks and check the original goals.
